A common problem in Singapore, ants have been known to build nests in homes during the monsoon season. They find and swarm uncovered food and sweets quickly, and some species are known to bite. Ant infestations are often hard to track and get rid of, and can require specialised help to stop.
Pharoah Ants (Monomorium pharaonis)
Size – Up to 1.5 to 2 mm
Colour – Light Yellow & Brown abdomen
Pharoah Ants are multi queen colonies which cannot be control by normal residual treatment. The size of the colony tends to be large but can vary from a few dozens to several hundred individuals.
Pharoah Ants usually established themselves in areas near to moisture and can travel from room to room within pipes and electrical wires. Colonies can be found nesting in walls, furniture and appliances.
Black Garden Ants (Lasius niger)
Size – Up to 4 – 5 mm long
Colour – Dark Brown Black
Their colonies can reach up to around 15,000 workers but usually colony is at about 4,000 to 7,000 workers and the queen can live up to 12 years.
Black Garden Ants prefer sweet food and high proteins food as well. Garden Ants tends to often nest outdoors in the soil.
Carpenter Ants (Camponotus spp)
Size – About 0.5 inch long
Colour – Varies from black, brown to light brown depending on the species.
Carpenter Ants feed on a wide range of food especially other insects. The main colony in indoors will have to be associated with water leaks or overly wet area.
Cockroaches breed fast, are hard to kill, and have an uncanny ability to get anywhere. They feed on food waste, and are able to creep through the slimmest cracks and holes. They can carry diseases and bacteria, and are a nuisance in any home, food centre or restaurant. They are also incredibly hard to eliminate completely.
American Cockroaches (Periplaneta Americana)
Size – Up to 48 mm long
Colour – Reddish Brown in colour
It is omnivorous and will feed on almost everything we eat. Adult can live up to 1 year and can produce an average of 150 young.
American Cockroaches are active in sewers, kitchen cabinets, crawl spaces, tunnels and basements where the environment are damp and warm.
German Cockroaches (Blatella Germanica)
Size – Up to 12mm long
Colour – Brown
The female may produce up to 4 to 6 cases during her lifetime, each case containing 30 to 40 eggs and can live up to 200 days.
German cockroaches do not like motion and avoid light in the day and can be found in kitchens of restaurants and toilet areas. They spent most of their time hiding in cracks, under stoves, refrigerator in kitchens. If you see them during the day, you probably have a larger population than you expect.
